On “Giving Tuesday,” the Centro de Periodismo Investigativo (CPI) aims to raise $30,000 in just 24 hours to hire a journalist dedicated to overseeing higher education, focusing on the University of Puerto Rico. With the support of allies like NewsMatch and Open Campus Media, every donation to CPI today will be tripled. “The University of Puerto Rico is a public system of excellence that has shaped generations, but it has suffered extreme budget cuts of up to 48%, threatening its future. Deteriorating structures and sick buildings, lack of chalk, shortage of staff and professors, insufficient student housing, and issues with employee retirement are just some of the results of austerity measures that have stifled the university and have not been consistently scrutinized,” said Carla Minet, executive director of CPI. NewsMatch is a campaign designed to support fundraising for nonprofit media, matching donations and offering bonuses to media outlets based on specific performance indicators.
