Formalizing Community Aqueducts is a Discouraging Process in Puerto Rico

The procedure for community aqueducts to legalize their franchises and maintain their operation is so complicated, bureaucratic, and devoid of technical support that it discourages communities from formalizing the systems that carries water to their homes because of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority’s inability to provide the service.

VEREDICTO: ENGAÑOSO A días del sexto aniversario del huracán María, un suplemento de dos páginas publicado en uno de los principales diarios del país, y pago con fondos públicos, divulgó que 100 canchas de escuelas públicas estaban en el proceso de ser pintadas y remozadas, como parte de un acuerdo colaborativo entre la Autoridad de Edificios Públicos (AEP) y el Departamento de Recreación y Deportes (DRD). Además, anunció la inversión de $94.7 millones para reparar instalaciones deportivas en 45 municipios. “Las canchas de 100 escuelas públicas están siendo pintadas y remozadas”, lee el suplemento Todos por Puerto Rico publicado el 13 de septiembre en las páginas 14 y 15 del periódico El Nuevo Día.

A propósito de la Semana del acceso a la información, hablemos del DRNA

Hace 10 meses comencé a entrevistar a residentes, activistas y líderes comunitarios de vecindarios costeros para conocer las consecuencias de la crisis climática en sus playas, especialmente por la erosión costera. Durante esas conversaciones, las personas denunciaban la compra de terrenos costeros, como ocurrió en el barrio Joyuda en Cabo Rojo y el desarrollo de proyectos residenciales de lujo en el barrio Bajuras, en Isabela. Ese es el caso también del sector Quique Bravo, una pequeña comunidad en Isabela donde los beneficiarios inversionistas de la Ley 60, Daniel Grunberg y Tyson Carter, pretenden construir viviendas de lujo en una zona parcialmente inundable.
