On “Giving Tuesday,” the Centro de Periodismo Investigativo (CPI) aims to raise $30,000 in just 24 hours to hire a journalist dedicated to overseeing higher education, focusing on the University of Puerto Rico. With the support of allies like NewsMatch and Open Campus Media, every donation to CPI today will be tripled.

“The University of Puerto Rico is a public system of excellence that has shaped generations, but it has suffered extreme budget cuts of up to 48%, threatening its future. Deteriorating structures and sick buildings, lack of chalk, shortage of staff and professors, insufficient student housing, and issues with employee retirement are just some of the results of austerity measures that have stifled the university and have not been consistently scrutinized,” said Carla Minet, executive director of CPI.

NewsMatch is a campaign designed to support fundraising for nonprofit media, matching donations and offering bonuses to media outlets based on specific performance indicators. Open Campus, on the other hand, is a nonprofit media organization that collaborates with newsrooms in the United States and its territories to provide specialized coverage on university-related topics through a collaborative model.

“Today, we can pause to reflect on the causes we want to support and take action amid this consumer-driven season. Every donation is crucial to protect CPI’s editorial independence and help us grow,” Carla Minet said about the proposed goal.

The Centro de Periodismo Investigativo is a nonprofit organization that recognizes the importance of a well-informed public and the need for independent entities capable of holding public and private powers accountable as fundamental to Puerto Ricans’ democratic aspirations. The CPI is known for holding the government accountable, pursuing transparency through litigation, training students and journalists, and rigorously addressing issues related to the country’s fiscal, economic, and political crises.
